Annoucements and releases on Microsoft Office matters. They are published 'as supplied' and have not been edited or verified by Office Watch

Office 15 starts external testing

And so it begins …. Microsoft has started testing the next version of Office (called ‘Office 15’ for the moment) to a small group of people outside the company.

They aren’t saying much else at this stage except the usual platitudes that have accompanied a new version of Office since Reagan was president and since Office-Watch.com started 15 years ago.

“most ambitious undertaking yet for the Office Division”

“help people work, collaborate and communicate smarter and faster”

“important development milestone”

The only difference is that the word ‘cloud’ features more prominently than in the past.

Office 15 will be a system wide release covering not just the traditional Office software but also mobile, servers and cloud services. That will include the browser based ‘Office Web Apps’ but no word on whether the much rumored iPad apps are part of that bundle.

Online Cloud-Based File Repair Service for Corrupted Microsoft Office Files

Mountain View, CA, September 2011 - OfficeRecovery, a long-standing leader in corrupted data repair technologies, has announced a breakthrough cloud-based online service that cuts significantly the time from encountering a file corruption disaster to completed recovery.

Available at https://online.officerecovery.com, the service provides users with a simple form to upload a corrupted Microsoft Office document, spreadsheet, presentation or database for repair. After upload, processing typically takes from a few seconds to a minute, then the user is offered free and paid options to download the recovery results.

SSD's - some tips

Mostly for portable computers

SSD’s are usually installed on portable computers to take advantage of the lower power usage. That means your laptop can run longer on the same battery charge.

In our experience the power savings are not as spectacular as the early promises. Maybe 10% or 20% more at best in our trials. If you’re hoping for many hours of extra use, you may be disappointed.

Very high performance servers also use SSD’s for application where every tiny fraction of a second counts. You can use SSD’s in desktop computers but the price and low capacity makes it a poor choice at this stage. On desktop computers, a high speed traditional drive is a better bet.

Smaller capacity

Solid State Drives come in smaller sizes and with higher prices than standard drives. 120GB drives are commonly available for around $250 while a 250GB model at about US$526. Larger drives are available for a price, for example a 1TB SSD drive for a whopping $3,765.

Low use of Bitlocker

A recent survey has found that nearly 99% of computers that could encrypt their hard drives with Microsoft’s Bitlocker don’t bother.

On a normal computer, the hard drive is ‘open’. Even if someone doesn’t have your login password they can see information on the hard drive.

Anyone with personal or private information in Word documents, Excel spreadsheets or Outlook emails should consider Bitlocker. Office documents can be password protected but it’s a hassle to do that to all documents. Outlook is effectively open to anyone who can login to the computer.

Bitlocker is a system for encrypting your entire hard drive making it much harder for a thief to get at your documents and emails. Bitlocker encrypts the drive so the login name/password combination is essential to access anything on the computer. With the right login details (password, card or USB key etc) the drive is just a mess of unreadable information.
