OneDrive for Business jumps to 1 Terabyte

OneDrive for Business customers get a 4,000% increase.

Microsoft continues to push their cloud services with a big jump in available storage in OneDrive for Business from a default of 25GB to 1 Terabyte.

It’s a whopping increase intended to put pressure on Google, Dropbox, Box etc to compete or drop out of the race. Price comparisons are difficult because the products vary a lot especially when bundled with other services. Dropbox for Business offers ‘as much as needed’ storage space for $15 per user per month. Box has a Business plan with 1TB for $15 per user per month.

Office 365 Professional Plus

Anyone with an Office 365 Professional Plus rental package now gets 1TB of OneDrive for Business storage per user.

OneDrive for Business standalone

OneDrive for Business is usually sold as part of a larger package like Office 365 or Sharepoint online but it’s now available ‘standalone’ for$5 per user per month, discounted to $2.50 until September 2014. Or $1.50 for Software Assurance customers.

Who gets 1TB?

The 1TB increase applies to:

  • Office 365 Professional Plus subscription
  • OneDrive for Business (standalone) with Office Online
  • Office 365 Small Business
  • Office 365 Small Business Premium
  • Office 365 Midsize Business
  • Office 365 E series plans
  • SharePoint Online plans (SharePoint Online Plan 1 & Plan 2 etc.)

Naturally the wags are having a field day, suggesting that the larger storage provides more files for Microsoft to tamper or read and more data for the NSA to gather. Leaving aside the snide remarks in forums and Twitter, there’s an important point. Microsoft continues to focus on increasing storage availability and ignoring the legitimate privacy concerns of customers.

Any organization needs to think carefully about what, if anything, to put on cloud storage because anything in the cloud can be accessed by hackers, government agencies and the service provider itself.
