Excel 365 is getting (at last) a clear warning that some cells have not been recalculated aka a ‘stale cell’ with the addition of a ‘Format Stale Values’ option.
This feature only applies if you’re using partial or manual calculation modes. Most of us use the default Automatic mode where Excel updates cells when necessary. These days Excel is pretty smart about what to refresh and when.
Format Stale Values is at Formulas | Calculation Options. It makes any ‘stale’ (not updated) cell clear with a strikethrough.
Press Calculate (F9) or switch to Automatic calculation and the stale cells will be updated.
Partial or manual calculation modes are mostly used on big (huge) sheets which take a long time to calculate. In those cases, it’s best to choose when to recalculate instead of waiting for Excel to cope with each small change.
It’s a feature some Excel users will welcome with others crying “It’s about %@£$ time”. Having no indication of stale, non-updated cells has been a concern for many years.
