Microsoft have rewritten the Excel 2003 memory manager so that it is no longer limited. You can now make serious use of all the RAM on your PC, at least up to a gigabyte.
There’s some very good news about Excel 2003, and I didn’t want to let it slip by unnoticed. Office Watch reader CW writes:
“Looks like the softies have rewritten the Excel 2003 memory manager so that it is no longer limited to 64MB (as it was in Excel 97 and 2000) or 128MB (Excel 2002/Office XP). You can now make serious use of all the RAM on your PC, at least up to a gigabyte.
“This allows successful use of much larger workbooks and pivot tables than previous versions. I have read up to 1.5 million rows from a database into an Excel pivot table using Excel 2003.
The strange thing is that although this is an excellent reason for large corporate users to upgrade to Office 2003, Microsoft does not seem to have told anybody about this change! For more details on the Excel memory limits story see this article and associated pages.”
