Among the December 2013 patches is a fix for the latest TIFF image bug.
The most recent ‘zero day’ exploit for TIFF images has now been patched by Microsoft.
The security lapse is the latest in a long line of problems with the Windows system for handling images. There seems to be endless opportunities for hackers to change image files in ways that will give access to your computer. Microsoft seems constantly playing ‘whack a mole’, closing security bugs in the system.
On early November 2013, one of these hacks using TIFF image files went public before Microsoft had a chance to fix it. This particular bug affected Office 2010, Office 2007 and Office 2003 plus Office viewers
Now there’s a patch available here but for most people they’ll get the fix automatically via Windows Update.
