About hotfixes

‘Hotfixes’ are interim patches for specific problems. The patches have not been fully tested to ensure that the fix doesn’t have unintended consequences in the very complex software that is Microsoft Office. Until the patch is fully tested an interim patch might cause more trouble – ie the cure might be worse than the disease.

In the past hotfixes weren’t available for direct download, you’d have to call Microsoft Support and describe the specific problem. If they agree you have that particular bug they’d make the hotfix available to you.

These days hotfixes can be available online. From the relevant KB article look for a heading ‘Hotfix Download Available’ – if that’s present you can follow the link. Enter your email address and Microsoft will send a email to you. That message has a link to the hotfix download plus a password to access the package.

Eventually the bug should be fixed with a fully tested patch that’s generally available for download. This might be a specific patch, a cumulative patch which combines various fixes into a single download or a full Service Pack.

Unless you have the specific problem described and that problem is critical for you – do NOT apply hotfixes.
