Wrong Office installs cost $283k

Winnebago County, Illinois has to pay Microsoft $283,000 for installing the wrong version of their Office suite.

The Country had bought a volume licence for Microsoft Office Standard but had been installing Office Professional instead.

Office Standard has all the usual Office programs including Outlook.  Office Professional Plus adds Access, Skype for Business plus features like Information Rights Management and Business Intelligence.  The price difference for Local Governments is just over $100 apiece.

This came to light when Microsoft did a ‘compliance check’.

The $283k ‘settlement’ represents the difference between what the county originally paid for and what they really used.
