Notepad gets spell check and autocorrect

Have a look at Notepad in Windows 11, after years of neglect its been given a major renovation with tabs for multiple documents, spell-check, dark mode and in-built search.

It’s almost the same as in Word, Outlook and PowerPoint with the red squiggly line for misspelled words and a right-click menu to show alternatives and options.

A minor difference, you have to click on the Spelling menu item to see the options, unlike in Office where the fly-out menu appears automatically.

Any file type/extension not listed won’t have spell checking, which makes sense for .log .bat and other common file types.

There doesn’t seem to be a way to add more file extensions to the list.

And there’s more …

Notepad has been getting a lot of love in the last year, after years of neglect. It’s worth opening up and seeing what’s there now.

  • Tabs to open more than one file at the same time
  • Character Count on the bottom/status bar
  • Dark Mode
  • Bing search, select text, right-click to ‘Define with Bing’/

Some beta releases have Copilot integration, look for ‘Explain with Copilot’.

Save your WordPad before it’s too late
