Microsoft Office templates and Office Update will now require your software licence to be confirmed
From tomorrow (Friday) Microsoft is making some Office related downloads from their site conditional on confirming you have a valid licence for Office.
This is an extension of the Windows Genuine Advantage program where many Windows downloads require your copy of Windows to be verified as a legal copy before you’re allowed to get the download.
Now that will apply to Office Online templates downloaded from within Office 2007 system applications.
And from January 2007 you’ll have to confim you have a legitimate copy of Microsoft Office before getting updates via the Office Update system.
The company says the Office Genuine Advantage system is ‘quick and simple’ but also notes that the OGA system is still in a testing phase across 26 languages worldwide.
OGA automatically checks that your copy of Microsoft Office is not counterfieit or pirated.
Microsoft slipped a short press release out, you won’t find it mentioned on their web site. According to the information provided, OGA checks will only apply to Office 2007.
