What’s not free in the ‘free’ Office Mobile apps?

We’ve already mentioned that the ‘free’ Office Mobile apps (for iPhone, iPad and soon Android) actually have some features that are only available to Office 365 subscribers … but what?

The editing options available in the current apps is quite extensive and surprisingly generous.  For most people, they’ll be able to do what they need in the apps.

Microsoft has published a list of the ‘premium features’ that need an Office 365 subscription, but it’s buried deep on their web site.  At the moment, the company wants people to focus on the word ‘free’, not the ‘gotcha’ that might change later.

We found the list on a page blandly called ‘Office Resources’, scroll down to the very bottom.

Here’s the list of premium features as stated by Microsoft:

Word

  • Insert section breaks
  • Enable columns in page layout
  • Customize headers and footers for different pages
  • Change page orientation
  • Track and review changes
  • Add custom colors to shapes
  • Insert and edit WordArt
  • Add shadows and reflection styles to pictures
  • Add and modify chart elements
  • Highlight table cells with custom color shading

Excel

  • Customize PivotTable styles and layouts
  • Add custom colors to shapes
  • Insert and edit WordArt
  • Add shadows and reflection styles to pictures
  • Add and modify chart elements

PowerPoint

  • Check your speaker notes while you present with Presenter View
  • Add custom colors to shapes
  • Insert and edit WordArt

  • Highlight table cells with custom color shading

Qualifying plans

A qualifying Office 365 subscription is required to use the premium features.
