Microsoft has now provided a fix for the bad Outlook patch we told you about last week, though they’ve done it in a strangely clumsy way.
The original patch KB3114409 for Outlook 2010 sometimes caused Outlook to always start in Safe Mode.
After this failure of internal testing, Microsoft had to withdraw the patch from public release.
Now there’s a ‘patch for the patch’ to fix the ‘Safe Mode’ bug if it happens.
The ‘Patch for the bad patch’ is at KB3114560.
It’s not at all clear what’s happening. The original bad patch KB3114409 is still withdrawn so this new update is a belated fix for a bug caused by Microsoft in the first place. None of the Outlook 2010 fixes in original patch are available.
While there is now a ‘patch for the bad patch’ it’s hard for any affected customers to find. The original patch documentation at KB3114409 doesn’t have a link or mention of the fix.
