A new way to convert a Word document to PowerPoint

Word online (web browser) is getting a way to convert a Word document into a PowerPoint presentation.

For the moment it’s available as a preview feature in Word online.  See if you have it at File | Transform.

Transform document to presentation

Start from File | Transform | Transform to PowerPoint presentation

First, choose a starting PowerPoint template.  Don’t worry, you can change it later.

At bottom right is a ‘Blank’ option.

Whichever template you choose can be tweaked manually in PowerPoint or use suggestions from Designer.

Text only

Only document text is copied to the slides.  Images, charts, shapes, icons and tables are all left behind.

Once the initial transformation is done, you can copy some objects like pictures from Word into PowerPoint.

Transform

Click the Transform button and wait while the magic happens.

The new presentation opens in a new browser window.

The document text is split into slides.  Paragraphs become bullet points.

As you can see, the slide headings are empty, ready to be filled in.

Designer is open at right with suggested changes to the slide appearance.

Once the PowerPoint presentation is made, you can open it in PowerPoint for Windows, Mac or the mobile apps.

Word Headings become Slide Titles

Headings in the Word document (Heading 1, Heading 2 etc) transform to Titles in the PowerPoint slides.

Headings also tell Transform where to break the text between slides.
