Using Review mode in OneDrive, Sharepoint and Word

Review mode is a very useful sharing choice in OneDrive and Sharepoint for Microsoft Word documents only. It lets people look over and comment on a Word document without changing the text.

Only Microsoft 365 Enterprise or Education customers can get Review Mode. Look for it at the bottom of the shared Link Settings.

What exactly is Review Mode?

Review Mode is only available for editing in Word Online (in a web browser). It appears under the Reviewing pull-down list.

The document can be edited but with two important limitations:

  • Track Changes must be ON.  Any edits to the document will be traceable and no changes can ‘sneak in’ unnoticed and not attributed.
  • Comments can be added.

Only Microsoft Word documents can be shared with Review Mode, not Excel or PowerPoint – what a pity.
