Phi (uppercase Φ / lowercase φ / φ) is the 21st letter of the Greek alphabet. The uppercase symbol has various uses, such as the cumulative distribution function of standard normal deviation in statistics.
The lowercase symbol has two variants, φ and φ. It is used more often, such as representing the golden ratio in mathematics, or within cartography, geodesy, navigation, and latitude.

Here’s some examples of how the Phi upper case and Phi lower case symbols look in common Office fonts in Word 365. Fonts such as Calibri supports the alternative variant for the lowercase Phi symbol as “φ” whilst the remaining are of it’s variant “φ”.

Insert | Symbols | Symbol and look for the Phi symbols using Character Code 03A6 or 03C6.
Window 11/10 Emoji Panel
The Windows 11/10 Emoji Panel has the Phi symbol Φ. Use Win + . (period/fullstop) to open the panel.
Choose the Symbols tab (the third of the top row icons), then the Language Symbols section which is marked by the capital Ω … handy that. To find the Phi letters, scroll down the list.

MacOS and Office for Mac inserting characters
On a Mac, to enter the Male, Female or combo symbol:
- Command + Control + Spacebar shortcut to open the Character Viewer.
- Search for “Phi“ should find the symbol you need as the first result.
Despite the name Character Viewer, the Apple system tool will also insert characters into any program, including Office for Mac.
