Office 2007 cumulative update - just as unhelpful as for Office 2003

The announcement of Office 2007 cumulative update for August 2008 is astonishingly light on any information that might be useful for Microsoft’s paying customers.

The announcement of Office 2007 cumulative update for August 2008 is astonishingly light on any information that might be useful for Microsoft’s paying customers.

As already mentioned by Office Watch, Microsoft’s documentation for ‘cumulative updates’ for Office is extremely poor. The Office 2003 cumulative update for August 2008 is a beacon of obscurity that would do proud the Sir Humphrey’s in any government civil service.

The Office 2007 cumulative update for August 2008 uses almost the same obscure and unhelpful wording.

Revision 1.1 dated 28 August 2008 is copied below – you’re welcome to compare it with the very similar article for the Office 2003 cumulative update we’ve published here.

What’s wrong with the Knowledge Base article? In short, there’s no list of the fixes patched in the cumulative update and no direct way to get the update (even if you knew what was in it).

For more details we’re tempted to ‘do a Microsoft’ and clone our article about the Office 2003 update with a few changes to suit .

Instead have a look at our article on the Office 2003 cumulative update since both the Office 2003 and Office 2007 cumulative updates have the same documentation problems.

INTRODUCTION

The 2007 Microsoft Office suites hotfixes are created for specific 2007 Office suite service packs. You must apply the 2007 Office suite Service Pack 1 to an installation of the 2007 Office suite. By default, any hotfix that is provided in a 2007 Office suite service pack is included in the next 2007 Office suites service pack.

The cumulative update package for August 2008 contains hotfixes for the 2007 Office suites issues that have been fixed since the release of Service Pack 1.

We recommend that you test hotfixes before you deploy them in a production environment. Because the builds are cumulative, each new fix release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous 2007 Office suites fix release. We recommend that you consider applying the most recent fix release that contains this hotfix.

Important notes about the cumulative update package

· The 2007 Office suites hotfixes are multilanguage. Therefore, there is only one cumulative hotfix package for all languages.

· One cumulative hotfix package includes all the component packages. The cumulative update package updates only those components that are installed on the system.

How to obtain the August 2008 cumulative update package for the 2007 Office suites Service Pack 1

A supported cumulative update package is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the applications that are described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing these specific problems. This cumulative update package may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by any of these problems, we recommend that you wait for the next 2007 Office suites service pack that contains the hotfixes in this cumulative update package.

If the cumulative update is available for download, there is a “Hotfix download available” section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, submit a request to Microsoft Online Customer Services to obtain the cumulative update package.

Note If additional issues occur or any troubleshooting is required, you might have to create a separate service request.
