An enigmatic Microsoft tweet about Word Dark Mode set off plenty of talk about changes to the look of Office 365 ,,, but does a single Twitter message mean anything? The response tweets did reveal some interesting tips about Dark Mode.
Here’s the tweet that started it all …
Nothing too exciting there, it’s the same look at the current Word 365 for Windows. This example with Windows 11, with the rounded corners that we’re all supposed to be excited about.
We think this was just a promotional tweet to remind people about Dark Mode in Office 365 … nothing more.
Dark Grey Mode is Dark Mode
The comments did include an interesting reply from a Microsoft Product Manager to a comment that ‘Dark’ mode was really ‘Dark Grey Mode’
“Part of the reason we don’t use a true black color is that pure black + white is more visually jarring, and one of the goals of the feature is to reduce eye strain, which is more easily accomplished with dark grey.”
Dark Mode with white page
Some people on the Twitter thread asked for white page backgrounds with dark mode. That’s already possible, in fact there are two ways to have Dark Mode for the ribbons, title and status bars but white background for the document itself.
File | Options | General | Personalize then check the ‘Disable Dark Mode’ box next to the selected Office Theme.
Or go to the View tab and click the ‘Switch Modes’ button.
