Microsoft Office has plenty of important changes and end dates coming in 2023, starting with two in January. Here’s a list of what Microsoft has in store for their paying customers.
Microsoft 365 app coming in January 2023
The Office mobile app (the ‘all in one’ app) is being changed and renamed to become the “Microsoft 365 app”.
So far, Microsoft has been big on hype for the ‘new’ app but little substance beyond the standard platitudes.

There’s no specific release date but Microsoft is promising it for January 2023.
Microsoft 365 ends for Windows 8.1
On 10 January 2023 Microsoft 365 will end support on Windows 8.1 machines that’s about 2 years, 2 months ago
Microsoft 365 apps will continue to work on Windows 8.1 but won’t get any security patches or bug fixes.
Crucially, NO new installations of Microsoft 365 software on Windows 8.1 will be permitted.
Windows 8.1 ends
10 January 2023 (about 2 years, 2 months ago) is also the date that Windows 8.1 ends support. No more bug or security patches.
As usual, the software will continue to work normally but will be a gradually increasing risk over time.
OneDrive attachments changing
From 1 February 2023 (about 2 years, 1 month ago), the space used to store Outlook.com email attachments will be counted against the OneDrive quota.
This probably won’t affect Microsoft 365 customers because they have 1 Terabyte of OneDrive storage already.
However, Outlook.com users without a Microsoft 365 plan only have 5GB ‘free’ allowance. A significant part of that could be used up by email attachments.
Microsoft is being cagey about how this change will work and have refused to answer specific questions about it. It seems paying customers will have to wait until 1 February to see what they do.

Extra OneDrive storage for Microsoft 365 customers
Microsoft 365 customers will get ‘at least’ an extra 50GB of OneDrive quota on 1 February 2023 – oh so generous.
And the increase is only temporary for one year. It’s meant to make up for the space used by Outlook.com email attachments.
