Ohm symbol Ω in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook

Type the Ohm symbol Ω  into Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Outlook.  Both in Office for Windows and Office for Mac. Also the unofficial Siemens symbol, an inverted Ohm ℧ .

Ohm is a measure of electical resistance with the symbol Ω   It’s an official SI Unit of measurement just like gram, metre and many others.

Alternative Ohm symbol – Omega Ω

Ohm is the same symbol as the Greek capital letter Omega  Ω  however the Unicode character system has a separate Ohm character.

If the font you’re using doesn’t have Ohm, try Greek Omega instead. Most good fonts include the standard Greek letters.

Greek Omega Capital:  Unicode U+3A9.  Word for Windows  3A9 then Alt + X

Siemens or mho – Inverted Ohm Symbol

There’s also an inverted Ohm symbol ℧ , an inverted Greek omega that’s an unofficial but useful symbol for Siemens.  Siemens is the reciprocal of an Ohm, which explains why an unofficial name for siemens is mho (ohm spelled backwards).

The official Siemens symbol is a capital  S  but that’s prone to misunderstanding so there are common but unofficial alternatives:

Inverted Ohm:  Unicode U+2127.  Word for Windows  2127 then Alt + X  . Similar to the Ohm symbol, Siemens ℧  – it’s an inverted Greek Omega. It has its own Unicode setting, right next to Ohm.

Ohm to the power of minus one: Ω-1 – the Ohm symbol and  ‘-1’ superscript. 

Word and Outlook

The Ohm symbol Ω  sign does NOT have an inbuilt shortcut in Word.

Use the standard Word Alt + X symbol shortcut 2126  + Alt + X

Once in a document you can copy it to AutoCorrect and make your own shortcut.

Insert | Symbols | Symbol and look for the  Ohm symbol symbol.

Windows

In Windows there are several shortcuts to enter the Ohm symbol Ω  character into any program, but they use a numeric keypad, not the number row above the letters.

Character Map has a search feature, something missing from the Insert | Symbol in Office.

MacOS and Office for Mac inserting characters

On a Mac, to enter the Ohm symbol Ω symbol:

  • Command + Control + Spacebar shortcut to open the Character Viewer.   
  • Search for “ Ohm “ and the Viewer will find the symbol you need.

Despite the name Character Viewer, the Apple system tool will also insert characters into any program, including Office for Mac.
