Type the micron µ, micrometer or mu μ symbol in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
Stuart H has an AutoCorrect suggestion:
” I need to use the symbol μ for micron (1/000 mm) and use mu for this. “
The Micrometre / Micrometer is one-millionth of a meter.
The μ character is the Greek letter ‘mu‘ which is the standard prefix for millionth. It’s the only SI / metric prefix which isn’t on the standard keyboard.
There are two Micron/Mu characters, they look very similar in most fonts:
Micron µ
Micron µ – the proper SI Micro/Micron symbol. Unicode U+00B5
or B5
then Alt + X
in Word for Windows.
Mu μ
Mu μ, – lower case Greek letter – Unicode U+03BC
or 3bc
then Alt + X in Word for Windows.
Either are available in Insert | Symbol.
Enter the character into a document via the Insert | Symbol dialog.
Once in a document you can copy it to AutoCorrect and make your own shortcut.
Excel and PowerPoint
use Insert | Symbol
