In addition legitimate students may be able to get the academic edition from a campus store for an even lower price. Microsoft is aggressively pushing OneNote in schools and colleges.

The Office Watch team likes OneNote, we have for a long time and am not ashamed to tell anyone that will listen. However it’s asking a lot for people to fork over a hundred bucks or more for something that is largely an unknown quantity.

The fact that OneNote isn’t available in any Office bundle makes it seem to most consumers like a marginal product that perhaps won’t survive. Microsoft says selling OneNote alone is a sign of confidence in the software and they might even believe that. However many people don’t trust Microsoft not to drop a product when it suits the company and leave the customers high and dry.
