Bird Flu Trojan

A nastie embedded in a Word document is nothing new but the recent effort called Naiva.A is topical and gives us an opportunity to remind all Office Watch readers.

A nastie embedded in a Word document is nothing new but the recent effort called Naiva.A is topical and gives us an opportunity to remind all Office Watch readers.

You should always be careful about any documents you receive – by email, network transfer, instant message attachment, CD or floppy (does anyone still use ‘sneaker net’?). Always check incoming documents with your anti-virus scanner (ensuring that it has the latest virus updates), regardless of who sends it to you and how it is delivered.

In Naiva.A an email arrives taking advantage of the bird flu scare with names like:

  • Outbreaks in North America
  • What is avian influenza (bird flu)?

The Word document with the email has a macro that puts the Ranky.FY trojan on your computer. Details here.
