It’s that time again sports fans – your monthly load of updates from Microsoft for August 2006.
It’s that time again sports fans – your monthly load of updates from Microsoft. Plenty for Windows this month but only two for Office users.
There is one for Powerpoint 2000, 2002 (XP) and 2003 plus Powerpoint 2004 and v. X for Mac. It’s covers yet another situation where a maliciously made PPT file could run other programs on your computer. Details here.
The other update handles a problem with Visual Basic for Applications (VBA is the programming language with Office). This problem affects a wide range of Office variants – Office 2000 & XP (not Office 2003), Project 2000 & 2002 (XP), Visio 2002, Access 2000 runtime plus Works Suite 2004, 2005 and 2006. Developers need to update the VBA SDK’s v 6.0, 6.2 6.3 or 6.4. Details here.
You might think that VBA doesn’t affect you because you don’t make VBA programs for Office, however it’s quite possible to get Office documents that include some VBA code. Therefore the VBA patch is prudent for all Office users with the above programs.
Both security glitches are rated by Microsoft as ‘critical’.
To get the updates you can use the automatic update system from the Microsoft Office web site or download the separate patches to apply to several computers in your home or office.
