A cheaper option for Office 2007 Standard

Instead of buying Microsoft Office 2007 Standard bundle – save yourself some money and get some bonuses with this alternative purchase.

Instead of buying Microsoft Office 2007 Standard bundle – save yourself some money and get some bonuses with this alternative purchase.

The standard wisdom is that you are better off buying the right Office suite in the first place, instead of ‘topping up’ an established bundle with a licence for a stand-alone Office program.

However if you qualify for the Home and Student edition (any home user will) you’ll save money buying the Home and Student bundle (H&S) plus a separate Outlook 2007 box instead of a single Office 2007 Standard edition.

Office 2007 Standard edition has a single use licence to use Word 2007, Excel 2007, PowerPoint 2007 and Outlook 2007.  You can install the software on a desktop computer plus one portable device as long as the software is only used by one person.

The Home and Student edition has all those programs except Outlook.  You can buy a copy of Outlook 2007 separately to supplement the H&S bundle. Home and Student not only has three licences for Word 2007, Excel 2007, PowerPoint 2007 but also OneNote 2007.  See our feature What’s so special about the Home and Student edition?

Here’s how the two options compare:

Buying Outlook 2007 alone to supplement an existing install of the Home and Student edition seems financially foolish based on official retail prices however the discounted street prices tell another story.

The low price of the Home and Student edition as well as aggressive discounting has lead to this opportunity for savvy Office buyers.

Compare the combined street price total of $180 with the comparable price of a non-upgrade Office 2007 Standard bundle at around $350.By combining the Home and Student bundle with stand-alone Outlook 2007 you get the same software as the Standard bundle (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook) plus OneNote for a lower total price.

The savings are marginal with the upgrade package for Office 2007 Standard which has a street price of about $200 – however buying the ‘Home and Student plus Outlook’ combo gives you entirely fresh licences for Office.  You retain your existing Office 2000 / XP / 2003 licence
