Office 2007 for half price - in China

From 1 July 2008, Office 2007 will be sold by their online store, franchised stores and Amazon.cn for a much lower price.

Microsoft has announced a 50% price drop for Office 2007 – but only in China.

From 1 July 2008, Office 2007 will be sold by their online store, franchised stores and Amazon.cn for a much lower price.

The actual price is a little unclear – there’s talk of CNY 699 for ‘Office 2007’ but that means little without knowing which version of Office 2007 that applies to (we suspect it’s the ‘Home and Student’ version). The current price for that version (whatever it is) is CNY 1,451.

Those prices convert to about US$102 and US$211 respectively – if the guess about the version is correct it means the Chinese price of Office 2007 is coming into line with the US prices.

Even with the large price cut, that still makes Microsoft Office expensive by Chinese standards. It’s more likely that potential customers will use a pirated version of Office 2007 (readily available in any Chinese market), earlier versions of MS Office or a downloadable alternative like OpenOffice.
