Tweeting directly from Excel

A month ago we wrote about how to import your Twitter feed into Excel and also Twitter searches into Excel.

At the time we said “There’s no direct way to send tweets or direct messages – but I suspect it’s only a matter of time before someone cuts some VBA for Excel code to do just that.”

Sure enough the code is out there …

John Durant has a good explanation of how to make the code in Visual Studio 2008 & Excel 2007 making a SmartTag to send Tweets.

While it is possible to send Twitter messages from Excel, most people would not bother, preferring to use a more traditional Twitter client or the web site.

However Excel’s ability to sort and filter data can be used with Twitter feeds to work through the large number of tweets that are sent each day. If you or your company want to track Twitter messages on a subject over time then Excel can do it for you.
