Microsoft is adding Urdu language support to Office for Android, but Office 2016 for Windows got there first.
Urdu is one of the many languages of India and Pakistan, spoken by at least 60 million people.
Coming ‘soon’ will be the option to use Office for Android devices in Urdu. It will be available from the Google Play store as usual.
Despite many media reports to the contrary, this is NOT Microsoft Office’s first support of Urdu.
Office 2016 for Windows already has a language pack for Urdu available free to Office 365 subscribers. The Urdu language pack is ‘partial’ with the interface “display language for some Office applications and includes proofing tools.”. Exactly what proofing tools (spelling, grammar, hyphenation etc) isn’t specified.
For those of you keeping score. The Language Code for Urdu is ur with Microsoft using the four letter code ur-pk (pk for Pakistan).
