The major AI image generation and editing tools are put to the test using real-world prompts to see which can truly deliver the best results. According to an in-depth comparison testing by The Washington Post, Google’s Gemini AI came out on top across all creative tasks — outpacing competitors from OpenAI, ByteDance, Meta and Adobe.
In their interactive “Best AI Image Generator”(registration required), the “WaPo” put the same prompt and image to the major AI systems and compared the results.
- Google Gemini
- OpenAI/ChatGPT (which is the basis for Microsoft Copilot).
- ByteDance/Seedream
- Meta AI
- Adobe Firefly

“Gemini came out on top in every test.
Al image generators have made a big leap recently, particularly in editing pictures with text prompts. Google has led by training its Al to preserve features like faces and understand how image elements interact.”
The OpenAI/Copilot system is used in all the Copilot variations plus Microsoft Designer, so coming in second place isn’t too bad for Microsoft customers.
The big surprise is how badly Adobe Firefly handles images. You’d expect the home of Photoshop and other tools to handle photos a lot better, especially for what they charge.
These results are very much a ‘snapshot in time’ for a very fast moving technologies. Come back in six months, or even three, and the scores could be very different.
