Make your own 3D models from a photo

Transform your photos into interactive 3D models in seconds with Copilot 3D, Microsoft’s experimental tool makes it easy to generate high-quality 3D models from simple images. Discover how this experimental technology can let you change the view of a person or object.

Take a photo of an object with a plain background and the smarties at Microsoft Labs will turn it into a 3D model.

Office Watch has told you about 3D modeling before and how it can be used to get a more interesting view of an object.

Until now, we’ve been limited to downloadable 3D models or making your own with special software.  Copilot 3D is a new, experimental system can take any photo and turn it into a 3D model.

An example from Microsoft turns this image (left) to a 3D Model (right) you can twist and turn to your hearts content.

Copilot 3D allows users to upload JPG or PNG still images (up to10MB).

The conversion process typically takes less than one minute.

The My Creations tab keeps the generated models for 28 days.

For best quality 3D models

Obviously the quality of the generated 3D model depends on your uploaded image. For best results, Microsoft recommends using an evenly lit photo of a single subject on a plain background.

Tip: with any photo you have, use the Remove Background option. Available in modern Windows Paint or other software to make an image with just the object or person without background.

Download the generated models in GLB format. Use GLB files in Word, Excel or PowerPoint plus modeling, game development, and design software.

Keep in mind that Copilot 3D is a Microsoft Labs experiment which might not work as you hope.
