Office for iOS gets iCloud support

It’s somewhat hidden away, but Word, Excel and PowerPoint for Apple devices can now open and save to Apple’s own iCloud storage.

It has been a long time coming but the Office for IPad apps have slowly moved from the Microsoft only position (OneDrive and SharePoint only) to now allowing access to iPad local storage, Dropbox Google Drive and iCloud.

All that’s great however the ways it’s presented is somewhat confusing.  There’s a ‘two tier’ approach with Microsoft’s own services (plus Dropbox) in a more prominent position than others.  That makes sense from Microsoft’s own self-interest but it’s not in the interest of their paying customers.

OneDrive, OneDrive for Business, Dropbox, and SharePoint are all under the main ‘Add a Place’ item.

Where are the other storage options that Microsoft is boasting about?  They are under Open | More …. which opens iCloud.

Tap Locations to see what other storage providers are available.  Here we have turned on Google Drive, which has been installed separately on the device.
