Less clutter with Internet Explorer 7

A suggestion for configuring IE7 to make your screen less messy

Internet Explorer 7 finally brings tabbed web browsing to Windows XP (and is supplied with Windows Vista).

The default settings mean pop-up windows still appear in a separate window on the screen – that’s probably done so IE7 acts in the familiar way.

The better choice is for all pop-up windows to appear as new tabs in the same browser window – this makes them easier to find and keeps all the windows from the same web site in one screen location.  That’s better than small windows appearing all over the place.

To make the change go to Tools | Internet Options | General | Tabs | Settings then change the ‘When a pop-up is encountered’ to the final choice ‘Always open pop-ups in a new tab’.

We also turn on the option ‘Open home page for new tabs instead of a blank page’ since we prefer to start from our home page (the Google search page) each time.
