OFFICE 2007 BUNDLES

Microsoft has announced not only the various bundles of Office 2007 but also the basic pricing. There’s a lot of changes and we’ll cover them all in the weeks to come but the major points are:

The ‘Groove’ collaboration technology that Microsoft acquired will become part of the Office suite under that name.

Frontpage is being split into two separate products – see here for details.

The ‘Student and Teacher’ edition now becomes ‘Home and Student’ but drops Outlook in favor of OneNote.

The ‘Professional Enterprise Edition’ is now called ‘Professional Plus’ while there’s a new ‘Enterprise’ bundle at the top of the range with all the Office 2007 desktop applications. Both of these new bundles will only be available through volume license deals and not ‘off the shelf’ purchases.

The retail products have the following official prices in US dollars (full purchase / upgrade):

  • Microsoft Office Professional 2007 $499/$329
  • Microsoft Office Small Business 2007 $449/$279
  • Microsoft Office Standard 2007 $399/$239
  • Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 $149/ no upgrade available

There is also a ‘Basic’ edition with just Word, Excel and Outlook which will only be available combined with a new computer purchase.

All these announcements are good but keep in mind that Office 2007 won’t be available until the second half of this year. You have plenty of time to make up your mind whether to upgrade, what to buy and at what price.
