In the near future you’re going to hear about a ‘Technical Refresh’ of the Office 2007 beta software.
For some reason Microsoft believes that it’s bad to say that Office is having a third beta release before Office 2007 goes to the public. We’ve never understood this, because the more beta versions and the longer development time is a good thing for customers.
Every week that Office is being worked on means less bugs and hassles for customers. Another beta version widely distributed means more chance for people to find problems and get them fixed. The Redmond thinking seems to be that a ‘refresh’ somehow sounds better.
Despite all that, we have to go through the charade of talking about a ‘Technical Refresh’ instead of calling it what it really is ‘Beta 3’. But a beta by any other name is still a step to release.
