There is a ‘new’ junk email filter update for Outlook 2007 – but questions remain about these updates.
Outlook 2007
Outlook 2007 users can update their junk email filter by downloading from Microsoft.
According to Microsoft (KB959634) these are the file details of the new update.
However, the installed file does NOT match the official specifications.
This is no small matter – reputable companies publish these details so people can ensure that the update is official and not some hacked or pirated version. As an Office Watch reader said months ago “I’m concerned that I don’t have the latest update or worse some fake spam details.“.
The file version and size match up but the file date and time do not tally with what Microsoft says you should have.
In addition, there’s the question of the apparent delay. This junk email filter was released on 10 Feb 2009 but is dated more than a month ago! It is possible that the file date/time aren’t truly the instant the file was made because the details can be changed to any date Microsoft likes. But it does suggest that the ‘new’ Junk Email filter doesn’t cope with any new types of spam that are arriving every day or every week.
A new Junk Email definition file has to go through some testing before public release – but that testing should not take a whole month.
