PowerPoint security patch next week

A threat to PPT 2000 thru PPT 2007 will be patched next Tuesday

Microsoft has given advance notice of a security patch for many versions of PowerPoint, which will be released on Tuesday 12 May 2009.

This may be a fix for the security hole in Powerpoint first mentioned by Office Watch in early April, though there’s nothing in Microsoft’s advance notice to directly link the upcoming patch with their previous security notice. The April security advisory is still noted as ‘under investigation’ and lists quite different PPT versions than the patch advance notice.

The versions that will be patched and are therefore vulnerable until then are:

  • PowerPoint 2000
  • PowerPoint 2002 (XP)
  • PowerPoint 2003
  • PowerPoint 2007
  • PowerPoint Viewer 2003
  • PowerPoint Viewer 2007
  • Office Compatibility Pack for Office 2007 documents

Curiously, Microsoft says that PowerPoint 2007 users will have to apply two patches – the one for PowerPoint 2007 and the Office Compatibility Pack patch.
