Microsoft's mouse-free challenge

Microsoft had an interesting challenge for Preview users of Windows 10 – unplug the mouse for a day.

They challenged previewers to use only the keyboard for an entire day.

They want to ensure that Windows and its apps have keyboard shortcuts for everything – as they should.

You can try the same thing for your own benefit and don’t have to be a Windows previewer to do the same thing.

Try using Microsoft Office without the mouse for a day.  It’ll force you to learn some faster Office tricks:

  • Keyboard shortcuts are faster than clicking on the menus. Hover your mouse over a button to see if there’s a shortcut for it:

  • The ribbon has keyboard access to all commands. Press the Alt key to see the shortcuts available, in this example numbers for the Quick Access commands and letters to select each ribbon tab.

You don’t need to remember keys, because the next available keys are displayed on the screen.  For commonly used commands, you’ll probably learn to quickly type the right keystrokes.

Tip:  If you press the wrong key, use the Escape key to go back a step.
