PlayWrite - MS Word as a game

An interesting leak from Microsoft reveals they are developing a new way to edit Word document.

Called ‘Play Write’ is described as a “mobile microproductivity application that works with Word to allow people to edit Word documents from their phone via microtasks.

Don’t get too excited.  Play Write is only available ‘in-house’ to Microsoft.

Common document editing tasks like shortening or comment triage are broken down into microtasks and presented to the user in a game-like manner so that improvements can be made in short bursts of time while mobile.

Play Write only has four tasks so far:

  1. Spell correct
  2. Shortening text
  3. Triaging comments
  4. Accepting or rejecting changes

Each of these is made up of ‘microtasks’ that are combined to do what you ask.

Under development are more tasks like ‘content creation’ and ‘changing the style or tone of a document’.

Play Write might never be released to the public as a full product.  Most likely the ideas and lessons from making Play Write will be merged into existing Office apps.
