Office apps for Windows 10 Mobile end support now and in 2021

The Office apps on Windows 10 Mobile devices have now ended main support and will end security updates, hotfixes and support in 2021.

It’s an unsurprising announcement and another death notice for the failed Windows 10 Mobile platform and phones.

Windows 10 Mobile support has ended

Support for the last release of Windows 10 Mobile (build 1709 October 2017) ended 10 December 2019 (yup, yesterday)

“ Windows 10 Mobile users will no longer be eligible to receive new security updates, non-security hotfixes, free assisted support options or online technical content updates from Microsoft for free. “

Though hardly anyone noticed that deadline.

Office apps end support in 2021

On 12 January 2021 (just over a year from now) it will be the same story for the Office UWP apps Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote for Windows 10 Mobile.

Of course, the apps will still work after that date but there’ll be no support or security updates.

Security is a concern, but keep in mind that the user base for Windows 10 Mobile was never large enough for criminals or hackers to bother with.

Office for Apple iOS and Android continue

Support for Office apps on iPhone, iPad and Android devices continues unchanged.

The user base for both those platforms is far larger than anything Windows 10 Mobile managed (Microsoft’s hyperbolic boasts notwithstanding).  Having again lost the battle for mobile devices, Microsoft is now focusing on dominating the screen time on their rivals devices.
