Microsoft has added new web links to access Microsoft 365 mailboxes in a browser as well as some other unpublished new domains to reach Office apps in a browser.
The web links are https://Outlook.cloud.microsoft or https://Outlook.microsoft
Use one of those links and login to your Microsoft 365 mailbox (e.g. Business, Enterprise or other plan). It doesn’t appear to work for Outlook.com accounts.
Both are the same as https://outlook.office365.com/ but a little safer because Microsoft has total control over the .microsoft domain. See Microsoft cloud services move to a new domain for a good reason
Other working .microsoft web links
Just for fun, we tried some other .microsoft URL’s to see what’s been setup.
https://Onedrive.cloud.microsoft and https://office.microsoft both redirect to the Microsoft 365 personal home page https://www.microsoft365.com/
https://Word.microsoft opens Word in a browser (word.cloud.microsoft does not)
https://Excel.microsoft opens Excel in a browser
https://Powerpoint.microsoft opens PowerPoint in a browser but ppt.microsoft doesn’t work.
https://OneNote.microsoft opens OneNote in a browser
Neither visio.microsoft nor visio.cloud.microsoft do anything so far.
It’s hard to understand what Microsoft is thinking with the difference between a <something>.microsoft URL and a <something>.cloud.microsoft link. For example why is there https://Onedrive.cloud.microsoft but not onedrive.microsoft ? Other cloud services like Outlook, Word etc have second level names.
This is a nerdy curiosity only because there are other more commonly used web links for all these services and the .microsoft links redirect to the existing domain setup. Hopefully Microsoft will combine many of the existing mess of domain names down to all .microsoft web links which will become the offical ‘home’ for these online services.
For the moment, just know these .microsoft web links are available and quite safe to use (they are not a scam).
