There’s a new Microsoft patch to fix a bug in OneNote 2016 which crashes when syncing with other versions of OneNote.
The problem is in OneNote 2016 but only the ‘MSI’ installed version. Not the more common ‘Click to Run’ installs, which includes OneNote that comes with Microsoft 365, Office 2021/2019. See out Your OneNote App? Discover the Quick and Easy Tricks to Identifying which one you have
The older OneNote can crash (Microsoft’s current euphemism is “closes unexpectedly”) when it’s trying to sync notebooks made with modern OneNote apps.
The fix is simple and might have already been applied by Windows 11/10 Update.
To check look in Windows Control Panel, search for Installed Updates to see if KB5002500 is listed.
If it’s not, either run Windows Update from Settings or download the patch manually from the KB5002500 web page.
Microsoft says that a computer restart ‘may’ be required.
