Does Microsoft Word understand new English words?

The Oxford English Dictionary has a list of new English words for 2025.  We’ve checked to see if the Microsoft Word dictionary understands all these new terms.

Some of the ‘new’ words are very familiar (‘load’, ‘class’ or ‘terror’) but with new meanings.  Others are quite new (‘gigil’, ‘ludraman’ or ‘shweshwe’).

We put them into Word 365 US English to see how which ones the Microsoft dictionary could recognize and which had the red-squiggly underline.

The result is a mixed bag.  Some words you might think would be unknown are accepted (‘pinoy’, ‘kaya’, ‘salakot’) even in the English (US) dictionary.

Use the OED’s press release for an explanation of each new word (tip: use Ctrl + F in your browser to find the word you’re interested in).
