Microsoft’s Aptos Fonts for Free — Use the New Office Font Anywhere

Microsoft’s default font family, Aptos, isn’t limited to Microsoft 365 or Office 2024. Anyone can download and install the complete Aptos font set directly from Microsoft to use across any app or platform. Whether you’re running Office 2021, older Office versions, or non-Microsoft software like LibreOffice, this quick download ensures full compatibility and access to Microsoft’s new typeface—online or offline.

The Aptos fonts are now the default fonts in Microsoft 365 and Office 2024 but they are only available inside those apps. New default font, Aptos, in Microsoft 365 and Word

Most fonts are installed into Windows or macOS and available to all apps running on that machine.  Microsoft 365 and modern Office have “cloud fonts” which are only available inside the apps.

  • Microsoft 365 apps (Windows, Mac, web, iOS, Android): Aptos is the default Office font and is delivered as a Cloud Font.
  • Office 2024 (Windows & Mac): Cloud Fonts (including Aptos and its variants) are supported.

However, the Aptos font family is available for everyone and all apps via this download from Microsoft: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=106087&msockid=3a03189e82726db3396d0ebf830b6c99.

It’s a small (2.8MB) download (the same file for all languages).  Unpack the ZIP file and install the fonts in either Windows or Mac.

Now the Aptos will appear in the font lists of any app running on that computer, whether or not the device is online.

Why download the Aptos fonts?

There are many cases where downloading the Aptos fonts is a good idea or, at least, worth doing as a “just in case” measure.

Office 2021, LTSC and Office 2019 (Windows & Mac): Cloud Fonts are supported; Aptos downloads on demand. But in Office 2021/2019, only some Aptos styles appear in menus until they’re used/opened from a document.

Office 2016 and earlier: Aptos fonts have to be downloaded and installed separately.

Non-Microsoft Office software: for compatibility of documents, sheets and slides with LibreOffice, OpenOffice and other suites.

Email software: if you’re using email software other than Outlook, having the Aptos fonts installed

Limited Internet connection: Cloud fonts need an Internet link for the first use so if your computer has limited net access, it might be better to download them all when possible.
