‘New’ features in Outlook 2013 aren’t at all new.
Sometimes the promotion of a new Office either gets too enthusiastic or is deliberately misleading – it’s hard to tell which.
For Outlook 2013 there’s two examples of ‘new’ features that aren’t that new at all. Is Microsoft deliberately over-egging the sales pitch or are the writers not properly aware of the product history. Since teams of people work on the promotion of Office we suspect it’s deliberate and no mistake.
Take these two samples from the “What’s New in Outlook 2013” that have us mystified.
Firstly there’s ‘Customize your Inbox’
The new feature is there – you can move around folders into the order you want. You’re no longer locked into the order Microsoft decrees, with one exception.
But ‘Rename the folders’? You’ve always been able to rename user-created folders in Outlook and move them around to another location. Even in Outlook 2013 you can’t rename the permanent folders like Inbox, Calendar or Contacts.
Then there’s this boast lower down the page:
Outlook has had search capabilities for many versions and in recent releases been much improved with the introduction of indexed searches and ribbon tab. But for the life of us we can’t find (no pun intended) anything new in the Outlook 2013 search functions. Certainly this paragraph from Microsoft represents a re-statement of a long standing Outlook feature.
Maybe we’re missing something?
