Google does DOCX

Google Desktop Search (GDS) now indexes the contents of the upcoming Office 2007 document formats (DOCX, XLSX etc)

According to Google’s help files, Google Desktop Search (GDS) will index the contents of the current Microsoft Office documents (DOC, XLS, PPT etc) with no mention of the upcoming Office 2007 document formats (DOCX, XLSX etc)

So it was a pleasant surprise to see our DOCX documents start appearing in GDS search results. No special configuration or plug-ins – it just worked on a computer running the Office 2007 beta. Cool.

If Office 2007 is installed on the computer, GDS indexes the contents of the new format documents. If the Office beta is not installed, then only the file name is indexed.
