A malicious document could, via Word 2000, allow other programs run on your computer. Naturally those programs could include worms and viruses.

Sadly there’s nothing really new here .. another day, another security gap in Office. The way to protect yourself is the same as always, be careful about opening documents from people and organizations you don’t know. That’s not always a guarantee of reliability so make sure you have updated anti-virus software running at all times.
