Office shortcut of the week - 2004 compendium

We place all of the “Shortcut of the Week” tips from 2004 in the one convenient place.

Tip 1 – Undo

The Undo function has become especially important over the years as Microsoft puts more ‘intelligence’ into their products. Sometimes it ‘corrects’ your spelling or re-formats something you were quite happy with, thank you very much.

Whenever that happens just press:

  • Ctrl + Z

(handily down in the bottom left of most keyboards) and whatever was just done is removed. This includes any automatic changes by the software.

Tip 2 – Euro € and Pound £ currency symbol

Entering the Euro € currency symbol is sometimes more trouble than it should be. Many keyboards don’t have the character at all and choosing Insert | Symbol is a pain.

There’s a simpler method that you can use to enter any unusual or unlisted symbol.

To do this you need to have NumLock ON and use the numeric keypad on the keyboard (not the numbers above the letter rows).

Hold the Alt key down then press the number code for the symbol. For the Euro that is 0128. Since the English show no signs of joining their EU partners across the Channel, it is worth remembering that the Pound symbol is 0163.

  • Euro €Ctrl + Alt + e or type (e) or (E)
  • Pound £A3 then Alt + X

Tip 3 – Move to the ends of the Excel world

Moving around Excel worksheets (those tabs at the bottom of the window) is faster than you might think.

  • Move to next worksheet Ctrl + Page Down
  • Move to previous worksheet Ctrl + Page Up

The ‘next’ worksheet is the tab on the right of the current worksheet. ‘Previous’ is the one of the left. When you get to one end, it’ll cycle back to the other end – so in practice you might just use one shortcut repeatedly until you get to the page you want.
