Microsoft’s College PC Bundle: Over $500 in Extras, But Read the Fine Print First

Microsoft launched a new College Offer, giving US college students who buy a new qualifying Windows 11 laptop a bundle worth more than $500 in extras . The package includes one year of Microsoft 365 Premium (with Copilot AI built in), one year of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, and a custom Xbox Wireless Controller from Xbox Design Lab. It sounds like a slam-dunk deal for anyone who needs a laptop for campus anyway but two auto-renewing subscriptions with a combined monthly bite are tucked inside the fine print. Here is exactly what you get, which PCs qualify, and what you need to do right now to avoid a nasty bill in 2027.

Microsoft launched its Microsoft College Offer on April 15, 2026, targeting US college students who buy a new Windows 11 laptop before June 30, 2026. The pitch is simple: buy a qualifying PC and get more than $500 in extras thrown in at no extra cost.

If you or someone in your household is heading to college and needs a new Windows laptop anyway, this is a genuinely good deal. The Microsoft 365 Premium subscription alone covers the cost difference between a basic and premium laptop purchase for many people, and Game Pass Ultimate adds real entertainment value if gaming is part of the picture.

What’s in the Bundle

The offer includes three items bundled with the PC purchase:

  • 1 year of Microsoft 365 Premium (retail value $199.99), which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Copilot AI built into each app, plus up to 1 TB of OneDrive cloud storage per person
  • 1 year of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate (retail value $359.88), giving access to 500+ games on PC, Xbox console, and supported devices, plus Fortnite Crew, EA Play, and Ubisoft+ Classics
  • A custom Xbox Wireless Controller (retail value $79.99) through Xbox Design Lab, where you can pick your own colors for the body, back, bumpers, and thumbsticks

Who can get the deal?

Eligible college and university students in the United States who purchase a new, qualified Windows PC may redeem 1 year of Microsoft 365 Premium, 1 year of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, and an Xbox Design Lab Wireless Controller. Basic color selection of the controller is included; other options such as limited-edition designs; different finishing, patterns, rubberized grips, metallic colors; and engraving are available for an additional cost. See Xbox Design Lab.

Eligible college and university students in the United States who purchase a new qualified Windows PC may receive one year of Microsoft 365 Premium, one year of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, and an Xbox Design Lab Wireless Controller. The controller includes basic color selection; additional options such as limited-edition designs, alternative finishes, patterns, rubberized grips, metallic colors, and engraving are available at an extra charge. • Offer available in U.S. only.
  • Offer for new Microsoft 365 Premium subscribers and new Xbox Game Pass subscribers only.
  • Verification of higher education student status from an accredited university or college in the U.S. with a valid .edu email address is required.

Why make this offer now?

Microsoft usually has some annual US College offer, what’s different this year is the Mac Neo. The Neo is a low-cost Mac laptop that works nicely with Microsoft Office see  Microsoft 365 or Office on the MacBook Neo? What Mac Buyers Should Expect

When the Neo was released we said “Current Mac users aren’t the market for the Neo. It’s aimed at students and others with modest computing needs plus those on a budget. ”.

This offer is an attempt by PC makers with Microsoft stop some students who might be lured by the Neo which has a US$100 student discount on the regular prices.

Which PCs Qualify

Qualifying devices come from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Microsoft Surface, available at Amazon, Best Buy, Dell.com, HP.com, Microsoft.com, and Walmart. Some highlighted deals at launch include:

  • Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3x for $499 (down from $749) at Best Buy
  • HP OmniBook X Flip for $849 (down from $949) at Best Buy
  • HP Victus for $950 (down from $1,399) at HP.com
  • Alienware 16 Aurora for $1,299 (down from $1,519) at Dell

Make sure the computer you choose has enough capacity for your needs. Memory of at least 8GB, preferably 12GB+. An SSD drive (not hard drive) with enough space for future needs, in our view 512GB is a minimum because 256GB usually gets filled too quickly.

How to Claim It

After buying an eligible PC and completing setup, you will either see an on-screen notification or receive an email at your Microsoft account address prompting you to verify your student status. You provide your .edu college email address for verification, and once confirmed, you receive a redemption email within about 3 days with instructions to claim all three items.

Redemption must be completed by 11:59 PM US Pacific Time on July 31, 2026, even though the purchase window closes June 30.

The Vital Fine Print

The bundle looks generous, but there are several conditions that could bite you later.

Mark June or July 2027 in your calendar right now and decide then whether you want to keep paying. Microsoft is counting on students forgetting to cancel, which is how subscription bundles like this make money. Go in with your eyes open, pick the laptop first based on its own merits, and treat the software as a welcome bonus.

Both subscriptions auto-renew. A valid payment method is required to redeem the subscriptions. After the 1-year promotional period, you will be charged the applicable monthly subscription fee unless you cancel. That means Microsoft 365 Premium at its regular monthly rate, and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate at its regular monthly rate, both kicking in automatically after 12 months. Set a calendar reminder now.

New subscribers only. Microsoft 365 Premium is only available to new Microsoft 365 Premium subscribers. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is only available to new Xbox Game Pass subscribers. If you are already paying for either, you do not qualify for that portion of the deal. Existing Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscribers can upgrade to Premium and keep their remaining time, which is a partial workaround worth knowing.

Activate Game Pass carefully. If you activate the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription before completing student verification, you must finish verification within 5 days or the subscription will be deactivated. Do not rush to start gaming before you have confirmed your student status.

The controller has limits. Basic color selection is included at no extra cost, but other options such as metallic finishes, grip textures, patterns, and engraving are available for an additional fee. The “design your own controller” headline is accurate, but a fully customized controller costs more.
