A recent security fix for Wordpad can have a side-effect for users of the Word for Windows 6.0 converter.
This converter is now turned off by various security measures (including Windows XP Service Pack 2) but if you need to turn it on again the directions to do that aren’t obvious.
The KB article “Cannot load Word for Windows 6.0 files” error message when you try to open the “What’s new” file in Quicken on a Windows XP-based computer” talks about Quicken products but elsewhere on the Microsoft site it sends you to that article for the necessary registry hack to re-enable the document converters.
