Last week, Microsoft re-released a tool that removes swastikas from the Bookshelf Symbol 7 font, this time billing it as a “critical update” to Office 2003.
Some days I just have to shake my head in wonder…
Two months ago in Office Watch, I showed you a new font in Office 2003, called Bookshelf Symbol 7, that contains two swastikas and a very poorly designed Star of David. Microsoft itself alerted the press to the potentially offensive characters.
One month ago in Office Watch, I pointed you to the removal tool that Microsoft posted, to take the swastikas out of the font.
Last week, Microsoft re-released the tool, this time billing it as a “critical update” to Office 2003. Oy. If you’ve run Office Update lately, you no doubt downloaded and ran the critical update.
For reasons I don’t begin to understand, this critical update not only removes the two swastikas in the Bookshelf Symbol 7 font, it also removes the Star of David. (Hey, I ain’t complaining! It was a very poorly constructed character – vastly inferior to the one in Wingdings.)
But… critical?
