Microsoft has released a January 2009 Junk E-mail update for Outlook 2003 which still leaves a few mysteries.

Outlook 2003 users can download a free update to their anti-spam filter from Microsoft.

There’s also a January 2009 update for Windows Mail (the Vista name for Outlook Express).

Normally updates for Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007 are released at the same time but there’s no sign of an Outlook 2007 update … yet.

The file download is small and takes only a few moments to install.

Unlike the December 2007 update for Outlook 2007 – this new update has file and version details that match the information on the Microsoft web site – almost.

According to the Microsoft web site the updated file is:

  • Outlfltr.dat
  • Version 1.4.7114.15
  • Size 3,610,424
  • Dated 14-Nov-2008 at 17:38

All that matches the downloaded file except the file time. Microsoft says it should be 5:38pm but the file itself is 9:38am.

A small matter but important in a world of bogus and hacked files – people should be able to rely on the info from Microsoft to ensure their Office files are entirely valid and supplied by Microsoft.

We’re still intrigued about the date of the update file – this is a January 2009 update but the data file is dated almost two months ago? It makes you wonder how current this new spam filter really is.
