Unassigned shortcuts in Word 2007 may be assigned

If you make your own shortcuts, Word 2007 will mislead you about in-built shortcuts that will conflict with your own.

If you make your own shortcuts, Word 2007 will mislead you about in-built shortcuts that will conflict with your own.

In our article about the Full Screen View in Word 2007 we used this screen shot.

Word 2007 - Customize Keyboard dialog image from Unassigned shortcuts in Word 2007 may be assigned at Office-Watch.com

If you make a shortcut like the one above it won’t work – pressing Alt + F won’t take you to Full Screen mode or any other command you assign to the shortcut.

The problem is the new shortcut key (Alt + F) which is said by Word 2007 to be [unassigned] .

But Alt + F among many shortcuts is most definitely assigned, despite what Word 2007 is telling you.

Alt + F is the shortcut key to the Office button (the big round button on top left). Among other shortcuts that Word 2007 wrongly says are unassigned are Alt + any of these letter s H , N , P, S, M, R, W and L. These are the shortcut keys to each tab in the Word 2007 ribbon.

Microsoft chose Alt + F because it is the same shortcut that gave you the File menu in Word 2003 and earlier versions of Word.

It seems that all the ribbon and most Office 2003 compatibility shortcuts are ignored by the Customize Keyboard dialog – they’ll wrongly show as [unassigned] leaving users scratching their heads when their new shortcut won’t work.

A bug to be fixed in Service Pack 2.
